Best Fabrics for Men's Summer Shirts: A Practical Guide
The best fabric for a summer shirt depends on how you will wear it. Lightweight cotton and linen are useful starting points for everyday outfits; a quick-drying performance fabric may suit a more active day. Check the fabric's weight, construction and fit alongside its fibre content.

Cotton: an everyday option
Cotton jersey works well for a casual T-shirt. Cotton also absorbs moisture and can stay damp after heavy sweating, so it is not automatically the fastest-drying option. A thick cotton tee feels different from a lightweight one. Poplin and chambray describe fabric constructions, not separate fibres; check the composition and thickness of each shirt.
Linen: a relaxed shirt with texture
A lightweight linen shirt with room through the body is an easy summer styling choice. Expect visible creasing. A cotton-linen blend offers another feel, but the fibre percentages alone cannot tell you which finished shirt will be most comfortable.
Viscose and performance fabrics
Viscose can give a shirt a fluid drape. Clothing described as bamboo is often viscose or rayon made from bamboo; that description does not prove natural antibacterial properties. Read the actual fibre label and care instructions.
Polyester and nylon performance garments can be designed to move moisture and dry quickly. Do not rule them out simply because they are synthetic. Equally, a polyester label alone does not establish those features: look for information about the particular garment.
Three checks before buying
- Weight: g/m² describes fabric mass per area, not a cooling rating.
- Room: check that the chest and sleeves allow comfortable movement.
- Use: choose an everyday tee for casual plans and assess technical features separately for sport.
